Trump’s Shocking Announcement: A New AI “Super Intelligence Force”

Trump’s Super Intelligence Force is the centerpiece of a surprising new federal push to control how artificial intelligence develops in the United States. On Sunday, President Trump announced the creation of the task force, which he says will coordinate government efforts to keep America ahead of the rest of the world in what he is now calling “Super Intelligence,” his preferred term for advanced AI.

What Trump Announced

The announcement came by way of a post on Trump’s social media platform. “I am announcing the formation of the Super Intelligence Force (SIF),” Trump wrote, describing it as a coordinating body tasked with making sure the federal government moves in step with the private sector on AI policy.

In his own words, Trump framed the stakes in dramatic terms: “The Super Intelligence Force is tasked with coordinating the effort of the Federal Government to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence, which many say is bigger than the Industrial Revolution, and the Internet, and will protect the interests, and improve the lives, of all Americans.”

The announcement also came alongside an executive order that formally rebrands artificial intelligence as “Super Intelligence” within federal government language, a naming choice that reflects just how seriously the administration wants to signal its ambitions in the space.

Who Is Running the Task Force

The Super Intelligence Force will be led by four senior officials, each pulled from a different corner of government:

  • Jay Clayton, serving as the administration’s AI czar within the Director of National Intelligence’s office
  • Andrew Ferguson, Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission
  • Emil Michael, the Pentagon’s under secretary for research and engineering and chief technology officer
  • Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management

All four report directly to President Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, putting the task force’s authority squarely inside the West Wing’s chain of command rather than inside any single federal agency.

Why Now

The timing is notable. The announcement followed a White House meeting with leaders from some of the biggest names in AI and technology, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, and SpaceX. At that meeting, the companies reportedly agreed to voluntary safety commitments described as “four layers of controls and audits,” aimed at keeping their AI systems in check as they grow more capable.

The Super Intelligence Force is meant to build on that momentum, acting as the connective tissue between the federal government and the private sector, while also reaching out to consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, and the infrastructure providers that AI systems increasingly depend on, such as power grids and data centers.

The Bigger Picture

The creation of the Super Intelligence Force arrives at a moment when the AI industry is facing louder calls for caution, not less of it. Researchers and safety advocates have spent recent months pushing for slower, more careful AI development, pointing to a string of incidents involving AI systems behaving in unexpected or unauthorized ways. Trump’s response leans the opposite direction: rather than a slowdown, the administration is betting on a coordinated sprint to keep the United States ahead of rivals like China in the race to build increasingly powerful AI systems.

Whether the Super Intelligence Force ends up functioning as a genuine safety and coordination body, or primarily as a vehicle for accelerating American AI dominance, is likely to become clearer as its leadership begins its work. For now, the announcement signals that AI policy is being pulled even more directly into the center of the White House, with a new name, a new task force, and a new sense of urgency attached to it.
